In a proactive move to enhance earthquake preparedness, SM City Cebu, SM Seaside City Cebu, and SM City Consolacion joined forces with local emergency services for a comprehensive earthquake drill on November 9. This exercise was a direct response to the national government’s call for heightened readiness.
Commencing promptly at 9 AM, simulated earthquake tremors echoed through the public address systems of the malls, marking the beginning of the drill. Participants, including employees, tenants, and various agency personnel, quickly adopted the “drop, cover, and hold” safety position beneath desks and counters.
Subsequently, marshals directed an orderly evacuation to designated safety zones, followed by thorough checks to confirm no individuals remained inside the premises.
This initiative aligns with the National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED), a campaign encouraging both governmental and private entities to bolster disaster preparedness. SM’s involvement in this program underscores their commitment to equipping staff and affiliates with vital safety knowledge.
The drill also exemplifies the successful Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between SM and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), emphasizing regular training for SM personnel to adeptly handle potential earthquakes and fires. The growing public and private sector engagement in the NSED highlights a collective effort to fortify community resilience in the face of natural calamities.
