The bustling city of Cebu is set to become the epicenter of aviation discussions as it hosts the 59th Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation Asia and Pacific Regions (DGCA) in October 2024.
The Philippines, represented by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), will proudly chair and host the prestigious event, following a symbolic flag transfer ceremony from Bangladesh to the Philippines.
The ceremonial handover of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) flag took place in the presence of esteemed dignitaries including ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, Philippine Ambassador to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives Leo Tito L. Ausan Jr., Regional Director of the ICAO Asia and Pacific Office Tao Ma, and other notable delegates.
Under the theme “Shaping the Future of Air Transport: Sustainable, Resilient, and Inclusive,” CAAP Director General, Captain Manuel Antonio Tamayo, extended a warm invitation to delegates, urging them to immerse themselves in the rich culture, history, and hospitality of the Philippines during the conference.
The DGCA serves as a pivotal platform for directors general of aviation in the Asia and Pacific region to engage in substantive discussions and side meetings on a myriad of critical topics. These include but are not limited to aviation safety, aviation security, air navigation, environmental sustainability, and the economic development of air transportation.
The Philippines’ selection as host for the 59th DGCA comes on the heels of its election as vice-chair for the 58th edition held in 2023, affirming the nation’s growing prominence in the global aviation arena. As a member state of the ICAO, CAAP represents the Philippines on the international stage, contributing to the development and harmonization of principles in air navigation.
The announcement of Cebu as the host city for the upcoming conference was met with widespread enthusiasm from both member states and ICAO officials. “Congratulations, and thank you, Philippines for hosting the DGCA in Cebu next year. We are all excited to be there,” remarked ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, reflecting the anticipation surrounding this significant gathering.
