On February 29, 2024, at 8 a.m., Ecopark in Barangay Kalunasan will be the site of a significant environmental event, the 14th Tanom sa Paglaum, led by Councilor Rey Gealon. This initiative aims to plant 120 plants as part of the ongoing efforts to increase the city’s tree population and enhance its green spaces.
Councilor Gealon’s office has been proactive in environmental advocacy, coordinating closely with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) to obtain a variety of plants for this occasion. This collaboration is part of a broader strategy to involve various sectors in environmental conservation efforts.
The Cebu City Council has played a pivotal role in this initiative, having passed a resolution, authored by Councilor Gealon, that calls on CENRO to engage more extensively with the private sector. The resolution encourages businesses to participate in tree planting activities as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving environmental goals.
The creation of the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO), as stipulated by City Ordinance No. 2334, has been instrumental in overseeing the planning, implementation, and management of environmental programs and projects in the city. CCENRO’s efforts are geared towards addressing various environmental issues, including flood mitigation, through the promotion of tree planting.
The involvement of local officials, including those from Barangay Guadalupe led by Captain Apol Gacasan, underscores the community-wide support for the Tanom sa Paglaum initiative. This 14th edition of the event not only continues the tradition of reforestation but also brings together different stakeholders in a united effort to preserve and enhance Cebu City’s natural environment. – CebuLifestyleChannel.ph
