The Cebu City Council has officially passed a resolution requesting the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to conduct a feasibility study on the establishment of a railway system within the city.
Authored by Councilor Rey M. Gealon, the resolution aligns with the national government’s commitment to promoting a dynamic social order and improving the quality of life for all Filipinos.
Citing the constitutional mandate for the state to ensure national prosperity, independence, and a higher standard of living, the resolution underscores the critical role of efficient, secure, and globally competitive transportation systems.
Railways, noted for their environmental and economic benefits, have been identified as a potential solution to the city’s growing transportation needs, Gealon said in the resolution.
The resolution highlights the success of rail transport systems in other regions, including Singapore, as models for what could be achieved in Cebu City. Railways are lauded for their ability to move large numbers of people and goods efficiently, while also contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Councilor Gealon’s proposal is seen as a step towards realizing a long-term vision for Cebu City’s development. By improving connectivity and reducing traffic congestion, a railway system could significantly contribute to the city’s economic growth and environmental sustainability.
The Department of Transportation, recognized as the primary entity for transportation policy and development, has been called upon to assess the viability of such a project. The study would explore the potential routes, costs, and impacts of establishing a railway network tailored to the needs of Cebu City’s residents and its economy.
The resolution has been forwarded to the DOTr for consideration, marking the beginning of what could be a transformative project for Cebu City and its people.
The council’s initiative reflects a proactive approach to urban planning and development, emphasizing the importance of modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation solutions.
