Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu is set to captivate audiences with its original musical production, “KILAT: Dulang Musikal,” a tribute to the life and heroism of Pantaleon Villegas, better known as Leon Kilat.
The production, announced on March 19, 2024, during a press conference at the Rizal Memorial Library and Museum, highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage amid globalization.
“KILAT: Dulang Musikal” showcases the story of Leon Kilat and his leadership in the Cebu chapter of the Katipunan, emphasizing his role in the Philippine struggle for independence.
The musical aims to portray Kilat’s human qualities and invincible spirit, inspiring audiences with his dedication to freedom.
Anthony Hejie Suralta, the producer, emphasized the significance of the musical as a reflection of the school’s community spirit, with key roles such as director, playwright, actors, and musical directors filled by members of the school.
The production’s cultural relevance is a central theme, aiming to enlighten students and audiences about Kilat’s legacy as a symbol of hope.
The musical features original compositions by students, marking a significant achievement for musical director Alexa Andrea Yap in her theater production debut.
Yap’s goal is for the music to deeply engage the audience, allowing them to feel the full emotional spectrum of the play.
Orland James Romarate of the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission Office (CHAO) praised the production’s timing, coinciding with the 125th anniversary of the Battle of Tres de Abril.
He highlighted the educational potential of the play in promoting local history awareness.
