In an inspiring move to celebrate the heroism and valor of the 1898 Tres de Abril Cebu Heroes, the Department of Education Region 7, together with Palm Grass The Cebu Heritage Hotel, has announced a unique event that seeks to engage the youth in a creative and meaningful way.
The Cebu Island Hybrid Spoken Poetry Contest, set to take place on April 3, 2024, at 3 PM at Palm Grass The Cebu Heritage Hotel, invites students from Grades 6 to 10 to express their admiration and love for our heroes through the art of poetry.
Under the theme “Kaisog, Kalantip, Kaabtik: A Tribute to the 1898 Tres de Abril Cebu Heroes”, the contest not only aims to ignite the patriotic spirit among the younger generation but also to hone their skills in spoken poetry, a powerful medium that combines the beauty of verse and the intensity of oral performance.
The contest boasts a panel of distinguished judges known for their contributions to literature and the arts. Adonis Durado, a multi-awarded Cebuano poet, along with Cindy Velasquez, a professor at the Department of Communication, Linguistic, and Literature at the University of San Carlos; Iris Aliño Fernandez, a descendant of a Katipunero and an “Abtik pas Kilat” acting coach; and Mark Anthony Daposala, an author and a professor at the College of Communication, Art, and Design at the University of the Philippines, will be evaluating the entries.
This event not only offers a platform for young poets to showcase their talents but also serves as a bridge to connect them with the rich history and cultural heritage of Cebu.
It is a call to reflect on the courage, wisdom, and agility of the Cebuano heroes of 1898, and to draw inspiration from their legacy to create art that resonates with the community and the times.
Students who are interested in participating are encouraged to prepare their pieces that embody the spirit of the theme. It’s an opportunity not just to compete, but to pay homage to the heroes who shaped the history of Cebu through creative expression. – CebuLifestyleChannel.ph
